Date of Issue or Release

Description

As part of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in Port Moresby, PNG’s Deputy Prime Minister officially launched the K100 commemorative banknote with the APEC overprint.

The polymer banknote is the first banknote in the world to incorporate the SPARK® Live TRUSPIN feature within a transparent clear window. This feature depicting the eye of the “Bird of Paradise” is particularly effective being clearly visible from both sides of the banknote.

New feature (s) or technical innovation

The banknote is an upgrade of the previous 100 Kina circulating banknote, which has been resized, incorporates the APEC 2018 logo and includes the new SPARK® Live TRUSPIN feature within the polymer window. This is the first time this feature has been integrated into the window area of a banknote which can be viewed from both sides and in reflection and transmission which create different visual effects.

The banknote also includes several traditional security features including a myriad of substrate features and 2-sided intaglio.

Uniqueness

NPA’s strength in bringing this culturally-sensitive design narrative to life from complex design and security feature requirements is evident in the preservation of PNG’s traditional aesthetic across the whole note family while upgrading security especially on the new 100 Kina APEC banknote. This design integration challenge had to be thought through carefully.

For example, for the first time on a polymer note the SPARK® Live TRUSPIN Feature is integrated into the window (in the K50 & K100 banknotes). The feature is viewable on both sides of the clear window and can be viewed in reflection and transmission which each provide different visual effects.

Historical or local content

The Bird of Paradise is a unique bird to Papua New Guinea. This bird is depicted in the red intaglio on gold substrate patch and also in the clear window. The 100 Kina is the highest denomination issued by the Bank of Papua New Guinea and the intaglio design on the reverse depicts the transition of the economy from traditional to modern. As with all BPNG current banknotes, the front of the banknote depicts the PNG parliament.

Integration of features and design

The SPARK® Live TRUSPIN feature has been integrated into the clear window area of the design to maximise the visual effect while enhancing the culturally-sensitive narrative. The greater window area brings the Bird of Paradise to life with the SPARK® Live TRUSPIN feature representing the eye of the bird. Within the centre of the eye is the logo of the Bank of Papua New Guinea.

Graphic design innovation

The thoughtful design of the SPARK® Live TRUSPIN feature within the window enhances the aesthetic and security value of both sides of the banknote. The feature balances well with the G-Switch feature used on the left-hand side of the note.
