During this Discussion Meeting in Miami, we wanted to explore further the insights from other cash stakeholders as to how they view the challenges facing the CMCs. It was an engaging session with Central Banks, Banknote Equipment Suppliers, Commercial Banks, Banknote Printers, and Cash Management Companies–so all critical cash stakeholders–around the tables.

Questions for the tables included the following:
What are the most notable key pressures on cash processors and CITs today?
Theme 2: The Future of Cash:
- What trends could most impact the ability of CITs and processors to operate sustainably in the next 5–10 years?
- If cash volumes change significantly, what changes are needed in the cash cycle business and operating models— and when does this need to happen?
- How can the cash industry ensure that cash access and distribution remain equitable and resilient?
Theme 3: Regulation and Compliance
- What new compliance or regulatory requirements are adding pressure on CITs and processors (or to the cash infrastructure)
- What role SHOULD central banks and regulators play in harmonizing standards and reducing compliance burdens while maintaining integrity?
- Should there be a regulated “minimum distribution network” (i.e. certain number of ATMs/Bank branch/cash access points relative to density, etc) to ensure consumers and businesses can access, deposit, and change cash in an easy and convenient way? Why and Why not?
Theme 4: Technology and Modernization
- Are new technologies (smart safes, recyclers, cash automation, real-time tracking) changing the CIT/processor business model? If so, how?
-
- What barriers prevent greater automation across the cash cycle?
- How can equipment manufacturers and CMCs work more closely to ensure technology investment aligns with operational realities?
- Where is the biggest opportunity for digital integration in the cash cycle?
Theme 5: Collaboration and Industry Alignment
- What are the most significant misalignments between CITs/processors and other stakeholders (central banks, commercial banks, equipment manufacturers)?
- What role should central banks play in ensuring a viable commercial ecosystem for cash? (think of a wish list to give your central bank)
- Where could there be more clarity in the roles of the cash stakeholders?
These are questions we will continue to explore as we continue to examine the challenges and opportunities facing the critical cash stakeholders.
