The meeting introduced IACA’s proposed Cash Cycle Resilience Framework and explored how its systemic risks apply to coin. Participants considered where coin differs from banknotes and how those differences should be reflected across the framework.
The discussion highlighted several important themes:
- Recirculation and availability: Coins may accumulate outside active circulation, creating shortages even when substantial quantities exist.
- Infrastructure and commercial viability: Coin’s weight, handling costs and transport requirements create challenges for maintaining essential services.
- Governance and coordination: Clear responsibilities and cooperation across stakeholders are essential to align production, inventories and distribution.
- Confidence and acceptance: Security, convenience and reliable availability influence whether people use and trust coins.
- Contingency preparedness: Systems need sufficient capacity and coordinated planning to respond to disruptions and changes in demand.
These insights will help shape the framework as IACA continues to develop it with member input, ensuring that coin’s distinct characteristics are represented.
We thank everyone who participated for sharing their experience and perspectives.
