The Series focused on four stakeholder groups — banknote printers, cash management and cash-in-transit operators, commercial banks, and central banks and issuing authorities — exploring both the challenges they face individually and, importantly, what those challenges mean for the resilience of the cash ecosystem as a whole.
The report identifies a number of common themes and interconnected risks, from the commercial sustainability of cash infrastructure and the consequences of continued efficiency and consolidation, to governance, regulation, cash access and the evolving role of cash as a resilience asset. While the nature and urgency of these pressures vary considerably between markets, one message emerged consistently across the Series: maintaining a sustainable and resilient cash cycle requires greater coordination and collaboration across the ecosystem.

This report also provides the foundation for the next phase of IACA’s work. Building on what we have learned from the Key Cash Stakeholders Series, our next Focus Series will turn more directly to system-wide cash cycle resilience — broadening the discussion across the ecosystem and exploring the risks, dependencies and indicators that can help markets better understand where vulnerabilities may exist and where action may be needed.
