Description

Celebrating 50 years since the establishment of the Central Bank of Uruguay in 1967, the theme was the central bank’s 50th anniversary.

The bank chose to use Guardian™ polymer substrate for the first time in order to improve the durability of notes in the cash cycle, particularly for the low denominations as these have the highest circulation in the country.

The never-before-used large half window concept was effectively integrated with a beautiful and cultural aesthetic, adding greater security and visual appeal.

New feature (s) or technical innovation

The large, stunning half window on Uruguay’s 50 pesos commemorative banknote is an innovative new security feature concept, which enhances both the aesthetic and functionality of the note. It is also the first polymer banknote issued in Uruguay.

The half window features ink that changes colour and interacts with a dynamic embossing – which has never been used on a banknote before. It takes the design of the emblem of the 50-year anniversary of the Central Bank of Uruguay.

On the obverse, the emblem changes colour from gold to blue, while on the reverse the ink is trapped by the substrate opacification to create a blue shadow image that interacts with other elements of the note.

Uniqueness

The half window features ink that changes colour and interacts with a dynamic embossing – which has never been used on a banknote before. It takes the design of the emblem of the 50-year anniversary of the Central Bank of Uruguay.

Elements of constructivist art, like that of Deliotti’s work that features on the banknote, are present throughout the design. It is represented in different patterns in the background and in the clear windows that depict the map of the country.

Historical or local content

The blue and gold colour palette matches that of Uruguay’s national flag. The obverse of the banknote features the Uruguayan Coat of Arms, a map of Uruguay and a prominent 50th anniversary emblem. The reverse includes a representation of the 1967 modern artwork in wood by Uruguayan artist Walter Deliotti, titled “Mural: Port Construction”.

The original mural is displayed in the most public area of the central bank building, accessible to citizens for contemplation and appreciation. The installation of this work is based on the idea that economics and culture together foster development in society.

Elements of constructivist art, like that of Deliotti’s work, are present throughout the banknote design. It is represented in different patterns in the background and in the clear windows that depict the map of the country.

Integration of features and design

All of the innovative security features are integrated harmoniously with the design, including the large half window, a window in the shape of the country, offset and intaglio printing, colour-changing inks and precise optical effects.

This combination results in an aesthetically appealing banknote, as well as the public being able to identify the main security features easily to support anti-counterfeiting efforts.
