Innovation and Uniqueness of Security Features
The RollingStar security thread and SparkLive Truspin security features on all denominations work together, creating a complementary colour change effect that is challenging to replicate yet easily identifiable for verification.
The series takes pride in incorporating the preamble of South Africa’s constitution into microtext surrounding the antiscan pattern and the main motif on the front of all denominations.
Each denomination features the ”Big Five” animals in micro-structures within the background print. This design enhances protection against counterfeiting, as one of the small animals has been altered to serve as a forensic identifier, visible only with a magnifying glass.
Additionally, the denomination indicator is presented in positive and negative text on the obverse and reverse of all denominations to support the partially sighted community, allowing them to transact with pride and confidence. This is further enhanced by unique shapes surrounding the see-through register, which aids authentication for the partially sighted.
Integration of historical or local content that is relevant to the country concerned
The portrait of former president Nelson Mandela appears on the front of all five denominations of the banknotes. This honours his significant role in the country’s history and symbolises his legacy of unity, freedom, and democracy as South Africa’s first democratically elected president.
On the reverse side of the banknotes, the “Big Five” animals found in South African wildlife are depicted. The basket motifs featured in the background print on both sides reflect the nation’s rich cultural heritage, diverse traditions, and skilled craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
The artistic designs incorporates all eleven official languages, the Coat of Arms, national flag, and the preamble of the South African Constitution. This ensures that the banknotes serve not only as a means of payment but also as a narrative that preserves South Africa’s national identity. These symbols promote unity, patriotism, and national pride, essential aspects of South Africa’s heritage.
Effectiveness of the integration of security features into the banknote
The upgraded banknotes emphasize striking and integration of advanced security features to combact conterfeiting. These features are carefully selected to establish a security hierarchy enabling effective authentication for the public, cash and vending industries.
Each denomination includes a unique high-resolution watermark with ”Big Five” theme, complicating replication for counterfeiters. The security thread, also reflecting the animal theme, works alongside the Sparklive Truspin, showcasing dynamic colour changes when tilted – elements hard to mimic.
Additionally, the security thread of each denomination is uniquely identified with specific colours and elements, preventing it from being harvested and reused in another denomination.
Furthermore, microstructures in the background print of all denominations create an additional forensic identifier where one of the small animals has been altered. This detail is only visible under a magnifying glass, further enhancing security.
Aesthetic appeal and overall design of the banknote or banknote series
The banknotes serve as a bridge between the past and the present, connecting generations from the young to the old. They embody a tradition rooted in strong values while remaining open to multilateral dynamic cooperation. The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) maintains firm domestic principles while engaging with the global economy and collective challenges. This interdependence is highlighted by the theme of family.
The “Big Five” animals are depicted in family groups on the banknotes, illustrating the strength and balance that come from unity. The individual characteristics of these animals align with SARB’s values: Accountability is represented by the Rhino, Respect and Trust by the Elephant, Excellence by the Lion, Open Communication by the Cape Buffalo, and Integrity by the Leopard.
This series marks a significant leap in currency design, reinforcing public trust and confidence in the financial system showcasing SARB’s commitment to safeguarding currency while celebrating heritage and unity.
