Coin Description
The United States Mint nominates the 2026 Emerging Liberty Dime as the Best New Circulating Commemorative Coin. The Emerging Liberty Dime is part of a broader circulating coin program celebrating the United States’ Semiquincentennial, or 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, commemorating the United States founding on July 4, 1776.
Innovation and unique aspects
The 2026 Emerging Liberty Dime is available at face value and circulates widely, with 452 million released into circulation as of July 6, 2026. To meet this incredible demand while retaining the intricate detail in the coin, the Emerging Liberty Dime became the first dime to be crafted from laser-engraved master dies. It is also the first dime to feature a personification of Liberty since the 1945 Mercury Dime.
Overall integration of Features
The 2026 Emerging Liberty Dime obverse conveys symbolism of early American coinage – a depiction of Liberty personified, emblematic of the nation, wearing a Phrygian or Liberty cap adorned with stars and stripes from the national flag, representative of a people freed, and a look of determination symbolic of the revolutionary spirit needed to confront a tyrannical monarchy. The reverse shows an American eagle, wings spread in action and clutching arrows indicating its willingness to fight for peace. Because peace had not yet been obtained, an olive branch us noticeably and deliberately absent from the design. The inscription “Liberty over Tyranny” underscores the symbolism. The date range, 1776-2026, indicates 250 years of independence.
