In July 2018, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) launched the commemorative R5 circulation coin to celebrate the birth centenary of Nelson Rolihlala Mandela (Madiba), who was born on 18 July 1918. Madiba was the first democratically elected South African president. When he passed away in 2013, there was a global outpouring of love and administration for the great leader who was revered globally.

The R5 commemorative coin is legal tender in South Africa and is issued to the public at face value. This coin gives the public an opportunity to pass on Madiba’s values when they transact with this coin.

Innovation of the design

The commemorative R5 coin was used as an opportunity to Invest in new development and manufacturing technology which enabled SARB to explore new features. This R5 coin incorporates both standard and new security features.

The reverse of the coin features latent image which is visible when the coin is tilted where the year ‘1918’ changes to ‘2018’ , a circular weaving pattern which is inspired by patterns of the batik design shirts Mandela used to wear and miniature lettering written ‘SARB’ and a micro lettering “FIVE RAND’ beneath it.

Overarching at the top of the coin is the Nelson Mandela Centenary wording and the main motif of the coin is the portrait of an elderly smiling Madiba.

The obverse of the R5 coin features the national coat of arms, the year ‘2018’, depicting the year in which the coin is issued and the words ‘South Africa’ (English) and ‘Aforika Borwa’ (Setswana).

Uniqueness

The R5 commemorative coin was developed to celebrate the birth centenary of Nelson Mandela (Madiba) to mark what would have been his 100 years of age in July 2018.
