Project Description

Banco de Moçambique continues to have confidence with GUARDIAN polymer banknotes, as they launched an updated 20, 50 and 100 metical again on GUARDIAN™ substrate, displaying the vibrant culture and history of Mozambique. This launch was a collaboration between Banco de Moçambique, Crane Currency and CCL Secure. The MXN20, MXN50, and MXN100 notes display a portrait of the first president after independence, Samora Moises Machel, as well as intricate patterns inspired by the Tonga people, and the diverse flora and fauna native to the region. These stunning banknotes are part of a comprehensive series released in honour of the 50th anniversary of the central bank and the 45th anniversary of the metical.

Banco de Moçambique’s commitment to celebrating national heritage and values is evident in the design of the new metical notes, underscoring the importance of preserving cultural identity.

The new notes promise enhanced durability and longevity in circulation. By selecting polymer for their lower denominations, the central bank ensures resilience and longevity in the cash cycle. This strategic decision reflects Banco de Moçambique’s dedication to providing a reliable and secure currency for the people.

Innovation and Uniqueness of Security Features

The new polymer notes by Mozambique highlight unique features that displays the country’s history and culture. Each denomination includes a transparent window with intricate security features, such as a golden circle and feather symbolising the pre-colonial practice of carrying gold in duck quills. The use of METALIX™ ink creates a brilliant gold effect, while EFFECT CAMEO™ is used for colour-changing effect, visible when the banknote is tilted. The notes also feature shadow portraits of Samora Moises Machel, with a latent image of the bank’s initials and tactile elements for the visually impaired. Additionally, the reverse side of each note includes an IRISWITCH™ ink, an iridescent band that reveals the denomination and central bank logo when held to the light. These innovative features make the Mozambique polymer notes stand out and provide enhanced security and aesthetics.

Integration of historical or local content that is relevant to the country concerned

The design of Mozambique’s banknotes not only reflects the country’s history and culture but also embodies the spirit of innovation and progress. The banknotes serve as a visual representation of Mozambique’s journey towards economic stability and development.

The issuance of the new metical notes celebrates 45 years, since the new currency initially launched back in 1975. When the country gained independence from Portugal that same year.

Moreover, the portrait of Samora Moises Michelle the first president of Mozambique after independence, ties the banknotes together and adds a sense of national pride and identity. The use of traditional patterns and symbols, such as the Tonga pattern, further reinforces this cultural connection, reflective of the rich heritage of Mozambique.

Effectiveness of the integration of security features into the banknote

The integration decisions of the security features into the new banknotes of Mozambique were carefully considered to ensure the highest level of protection against counterfeiting while also incorporating elements of the country’s rich history and culture.

The use of a large, transparent window inset with intricate security features not only adds a visually stunning design element but also pays homage to Mozambique’s past with symbols like the golden circle and feather representing pre-colonial traditions. The inclusion of METALIX™ and EFFECT CAMEO™ add a level of sophistication and uniqueness to the notes, while the colour-changing quill adds an interactive element for users.

Additionally, features like the portrait of Samora Moises Machel and tactile elements for the visually impaired demonstrate pride, inclusivity and accessibility. The integration of IRISWITCH™ on the obverse further enhances the security features with its iridescent band, reinforcing the commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Mozambique’s currency.

Aesthetic appeal and overall design of the banknote or banknote series

When planning the overall design and appeal of the banknotes, special consideration was given to ensure that each denomination is unique while still being cohesive as a family of banknotes.

The theme of the updated metical series on polymer banknotes, maintains the tradition of celebrating the values of Mozambique’s cultural, historical and faunal heritage. The issuance of the new notes celebrates 45 years, since the new currency initially launched.

Moreover, the portrait of Samora Moises Michelle the first president of Mozambique after the country gained independence in 1975, ties the banknotes together and adds a sense of national pride and identity. The use of traditional patterns and symbols, such as the Tonga pattern, further reinforces this cultural connection.

Overall, the design of the banknotes aims to not only be functional and secure but aesthetically pleasing and reflective of the rich heritage of Mozambique.
