Project Description

The launching of the new GUARDIAN™ polymer banknotes in Mauritius is a collaboration between the Bank of Mauritius, Oberthur Fiduciaire, and CCL Secure, which resulted in the introduction of complex designs and new security features unique to polymer banknotes.

The decision to transition to GUARDIAN polymer substrate for the MUR1000, MUR100, and MUR200 denominations signifies the commitment of the central bank to modernise its currency and stay ahead of emerging threats in the field of currency security. The phased release of the new banknotes, starting with the MUR1000 in December 2024, demonstrates a prudent approach to currency management and allows for a gradual adaptation to the new notes by both the public and financial institutions.

The central bank cited robustness of polymer banknotes and that it lasts much longer than paper banknotes, which is more cost effective. Further, innovative security features specifically designed for polymer provides landmark reductions in counterfeits worldwide, and polymer banknotes are expected to meet the needs and expectations of the public and cash handlers as far as durability, appearance, cleanliness and ease of handling are concerned.

Innovation and Uniqueness of Security Features

The security features incorporated into the GUARDIAN banknotes issued by the Bank of Mauritius are complex and unique. The transparent window with a Dodo vignette, alongside the IRISWITCH feature from CCL Secure, forms interactive features that shift between visibility and obscurity that sets these banknotes apart from their paper counterparts.

The window also includes a wide range of third-party features, with visual characteristics consisting of optical brightness, a colour shift from gold to green and dynamic light effects. As stated by Bank of Mauritius in their communications to the public, the inclusion of a window on the banknote is proven a highly effective security feature.

Integration of historical or local content that is relevant to the country concerned

The integration of historical and local content on the new polymer banknotes of Mauritius adds a unique and culturally significant detail to the country’s currency. The inclusion of the Dodo, a bird native to Mauritius and now extinct, on the MUR1000 note pays homage to the island’s rich natural history. The use of optical brightness, colour-shifting effects, and dynamic light features on the transparent window enhances the security features of the banknotes, making them both visually appealing and difficult to counterfeit.

Furthermore, the incorporation of the coat of arms, prominent figures like Charles Gaetan Duval, and iconic landmarks such as the Château of Réduit on the banknotes serve as a reminder of Mauritius’ diverse heritage and historical significance. The MUR1000 banknote, not only highlight the country’s unique identity but also reflect its commitment to innovation and security in currency design.

Effectiveness of the integration of security features into the banknote

The integration decisions of security features into the MUR 1000 Mozambique banknote has been highly effective in ensuring the security and integrity of the currency. The transition to GUARDIAN banknotes was a strategic decision made by the Bank of Mauritius to combat counterfeiting and protect the value of the currency.

Specific considerations such as the transparent window unique to polymer banknotes, with a vignette of the Dodo, hidden features visible under UV light, and the colour-shifting IRISWITCH feature have all been carefully integrated to enhance the security of the MUR1000 note. These features were designed with the goal of making counterfeiting nearly impossible, thereby safeguarding the economy and instilling trust in the currency.

Aesthetic appeal and overall design of the banknote or banknote series

The overall design of the polymer banknotes in Mauritius is both visually appealing and rich in symbolism. The incorporation of the transparent window adds that extra dimension in design. The detailed illustrations on the obverse, such as the coat of arms, prominent figures, and iconic landmarks, highlight the country’s history and culture.
The holographic egg shaped feature includes three visual characteristics, including optical brightness, a colour shift from gold to green and dynamic light effects which come alive on polymer banknotes.

The use of vibrant colours and intricate patterns further enhances the aesthetic appeal of the banknotes. The inclusion of the Dodo vignette pays homage to a species that is closely associated with Mauritius.

Overall, the GUARDIAN banknotes in Mauritius successfully blend tradition with innovation, creating a visually striking and culturally significant currency design.
