Project Description
On April 1st, 2024 the Centrale Bank van Suriname introduced banknotes of SRD 200 and SRD 500. To inform the general public, a publicity campaign was set up, making use of all media. For our two highest denominations, security is a priority. Additionally, given Suriname’s forestry and agriculture basis, the CBvS is increasingly attracted to a more environmentally friendly and durable substrate which could also provide state-of-the-art security features. Hence, CBvS has chosen the Green Banknote technology, as this can also contribute to a more environmentally friendly and efficient cash cycle. The security, design and aesthetic principles were communicated to the community.

Creativity and innovation of program design
Our project was focused on introducing the banknotes. We did this by airing an interview with Deputy Director Harry Dorinnie and advisor Lucien Nijman on television, radio, our website, Youtube and Facebook.
Another production was a video showing the security features.
The ”Mijn SRD” app was designed by the Centrale Bank van Suriname to introduce the new 200 and 500 Suriname Dollar banknotes.
”Mijn SRD” allows users to discover the design and the security features of the new 200 and 500 Suriname Dollar banknotes brought into circulation in 2024. It explains interactively how the security feature react when a banknote is tilted, held against the light, or if a magnifier glass is used. Additionally, an Augmented Reality (AR) functionality is integrated.
Quality of the delivery channels of the engagement program
We bought airtime on the radio and television stations that are well known in Suriname. Given the ethnic diversity in Suriname, information was provided in multiple languages (8), spoken locally. Our video productions were aired on 8 radio stations and 9 television stations. Announcements were published in 6 newspapers, press release to all media. The information was given in 5 languages: our official language Dutch, our lingua franca Sranan Tongo, and the mother tongue of ethnic groups, being the decedents of immigrants of India, Indonesia and China.
Ease of public use and understanding (effectiveness) of the engagement program
The message regarding the new SRD 200 and SRD 500 banknotes was well described and presented on a general public level. At the Communications Dept. we received little to no questions after the initial information was released.
We had an info session with staff of a company regarding the security features. This was upon their request.
The posters and flyers provided by Giesecke& Devrient were distributed to the Commercial Banks, Insurance Companies, Credit Unions, Pension Funds, Schools, libraries, major department stores, currency exchange offices and supermarkets. They were also made available upon request of others.
The feedback we got were mostly questions about information already provided and we only had to repeat.
