Project Description

BI issued the 2022 series of Rupiah banknotes to strengthen the security elements and design quality, covering three salient aspects: sharp colours and images, sophisticated security features, and more durable materials. Such innovations have improved the quality, acceptance, and durability of the Rupiah banknotes.

Amid rapid digitalisation and technological development, the 2022 series Rupiah banknotes immersed the latest integrated overt and covert security elements, including the use of Rapid HD® detect micro lenses security threads and OVMI Spark® with dynamic motion effects on the larger denominations as well as ultraviolet fluorescence and phosphorescent technology to produce a wider palette of colours and broader illumination across all denominations.

Integrating different security layers helps deter counterfeiting while ensuring the authenticity of the new banknotes is easier to detect by the public without equipment. In addition, the smaller denominations feature a high-tech coating to increase the durability of the most used notes in circulation.

As the largest archipelagic country, comprising more than 17,000 islands and 1,230 cultures, Indonesia has rich historical value, natural beauty, and cultural diversity. The diversity and uniqueness of Indonesia are reflected in the design of the Rupiah banknotes, which are embodied in the depiction of national heroes, magnificent landscapes, endemic flora, traditional dances, motifs, and ornaments.

A harmonious combination of security features, designs, and hues create an attractive 2022 Rupiah series, yet also produce reliable and trusted banknotes fit for circulation, ensuring the public feel safe, assured, comfortable, and proud to use the Rupiah.

Innovation and Uniqueness of Security Features

The new Rupiah banknotes were designed using the latest security features combined with unique Indonesian cultural heritage to create higher quality banknotes, familiar to the public and challenging to counterfeit.

It equipped with several layers of complementary and integrated innovative security features:

  1. More robust overt security features on the larger denominations in the form of Rapid HD® detect micro lenses security threads with dynamic motion effects that appear in kawung batik motifs and BI’s logo, as well as OVMI Spark® technology with vibrant colour changing and motion effects in the unique appearance of flora endemic, including moon orchid that flourishes in tropical rainforests.
  2. Stronger covert security features on all denominations spanning a larger area and using a wider variety of ultraviolet fluorescence and phosphorescent hues. The sharp contrast of UV luminescence and the unique depiction of Indonesian flora and heritage ensures genuine Rupiah banknotes are easier to detect.

Integration of historical or local content that is relevant to the country
concerned

Rupiah banknotes are replete with national significance, displaying Indonesia’s diversity. The historical, cultural value and natural endowments embedded in the Rupiah design reflect local wisdom and national identity.

Seven national heroes coming from various regions are depicted in banknotes. A reflection of Indonesia’s struggle and rich history while simultaneously serving as a source of inspiration for subsequent generations.

Traditional dances, batik motifs, and ornaments, such as the Legong Dance from Bali, Mega Mendung Batik Fabric from Java, help to preserve the nation’s cultural heritage.

Blessed with magnificent natural landscapes including Raja Ampat in Papua and abundance of orchid varieties that flourish in Indonesia’s tropical rainforests is well-reflected in the Rupiah banknotes design.

Through Rupiah, Indonesians are urged to love and live the spirit of unity in diversity. The Rupiah has become more than a medium of exchange; Rupiah is a symbol of national sovereignty, pride, and shared identity amongst Indonesian.

Effectiveness of the integration of security features into the banknote

Innovation has been a priority for BI in designing Rupiah banknotes, which also includes innovation in security features. The new Rupiah banknotes integrate overt security features visible to naked eye, tactile, and immediately detectable without equipment. Such security elements are easily identifiable by sight (colours, security threads), touch (intaglio printing, blind code), and tilt (watermark, rectoverso).

For machine processing, the new Rupiah banknotes integrate covert security features, including ultraviolet fluorescence and phosphorescent technology, infrared ink, magnetic ink, magnetic security thread. Rupiah banknotes also feature the Banknote Detention System and Counterfeit Deterrence System to thwart counterfeiting efforts.

Consider that smaller denominations serve as the most used notes in circulation. An innovative high-tech coating is applied to increase durability and extend lifespan. The seamless integration of several complementary layers of security ensures the new Rupiah banknotes are more reliable, of higher quality, fit for circulation, and safe for use among the public.

Aesthetic appeal and overall design of the banknote or banknote series

The 2022 series of Rupiah banknotes have a striking visual appearance that contrasts sharply with the saturation of colours, thus producing a solid and elegant palette. Each denomination of the new series has a different dominant colour to aid identification.

The design of each denomination depicts a harmonious blend of natural beauty, rich flora, and diverse cultures from all regions of the Indonesian archipelago. More than merely a security feature, the placement and choice of ultraviolent fluorescent and phosphorescent hues embellish the design.

The 2022 series of Rupiah banknotes employ a comparatively large watermark to enhance the design balance. In addition, the length of each denomination is separated by 5mm, which is attractive in and of itself.

Beyond a medium of exchange, the congruous placement and combination of designs, colours, and security feature position the new 2022 series Rupiah banknotes as an attractive work of art.
