Project Description

The SPARTAN™ Galapagos House Note explores what the next generation of ultra-durable, sustainable banknotes could look like at the critical note/coin boundary and the harshest circulating environments. Conceived, engineered, and produced entirely by CCL Secure, SPARTAN represents a step-change in lowest-denomination banknote performance and lifecycle efficiency.

SPARTAN is an advanced polymer banknote solution designed to deliver exceptional durability, substantially exceeding the lifespan of cotton-paper, blended substrates, and conventional polymer notes. By remaining in circulation far longer, SPARTAN significantly reduces replacement frequency and procurement volumes. For central banks, this supports lower issuance costs, simplified cash-cycle management, and a consistently higher quality of notes in circulation for much longer.

Lowering emissions s embedded at a system level. Fewer replacement notes reduce the consumption of raw materials, energy use, and reliance on fossil fuels across production and distribution. At end of life, SPARTAN banknotes can be fully recycled using an established process, supporting the reduce, reuse and recycle objectives.

By delivering breakthrough longevity, SPARTAN also presents a viable alternative to coin minting at the lowest denominations—an area traditionally associated with high costs and environmental impact. The Galapagos House Note demonstrates how material science, security innovation, and design can combine to reshape the cost-benefit equation of currency issuance. It offers central banks a tangible, evidence-based vision of how durability can unlock economic, operational, and environmental benefits without compromising security or public acceptance.

Design Theme

The Galapagos House Note draws inspiration from one of the world’s most powerful symbols of evolution and resilience. Its design explores how species adapt to fill ecological gaps, mirroring how SPARTAN has been engineered to thrive at the demanding note/coin boundary.

At the core of the theme is the idea that durability drives greener outcomes through longer lifespan of banknotes. Just as organisms evolve traits to survive harsh environments, SPARTAN has been designed to endure intensive handling, contamination, and wear—conditions that typically shorten the life of low-denomination banknotes. The design reinforces this concept through layered imagery, flowing forms, and interconnected elements that suggest adaptation and balance.

The denomination “8” plays a central symbolic role. Its form mirrors the “S” from SPARTAN, visually linking value with material innovation. The figure also evokes infinity, representing longevity, circularity, and the continuous lifecycle of sustainable materials.

Ocean currents further develop the narrative. The warm Panama Current from the north and the cold Humboldt Current from the south converge at the centre of the note, illustrated through dynamic patterns and colour transitions. Their interaction reflects the natural forces shaping the Galapagos ecosystem, while symbolising the convergence of durability, security, and sustainability within SPARTAN.

The overall aesthetic is contemporary and dynamic, designed not only to attract attention but to communicate a coherent story—where form, function, and material purpose are inseparable.

Integration of Security Features

The Galapagos House Note demonstrates how security features can be fully integrated into the narrative of a design rather than applied as standalone elements. Level 1 and Level 2 features are used to reinforce the themes of evolution, adaptation, and longevity, while enabling intuitive public authentication.

Several elements respond dynamically to light and movement. Tilting the note reveals colour transformations, while ultraviolet and infrared responses expose hidden layers that align with the natural-world theme. These effects provide clear authentication cues while enriching the visual experience.

Under UV light, VIVID™ inks fluoresce in a brilliant red, illuminating key elements such as the seal subjects, Panama and Humboldt currents. VIVID™ Switch transforms the albatross imagery and patterns inspired by Ecuadorian textiles, which shifts between gold and silver when tilted, and appearing white under UV light. This multi-state behaviour offers an immediate and easily explained public check.

VIVID™ IR embeds ultraviolet and infrared inks within a single spot-ink application. Under infrared light, a hidden tortoise image appears; under UV light, the same element fluoresces—demonstrating efficient layering of security within one printed feature.

Tactility is a defining characteristic. Specialised inks and gravure printing techniques recreate the familiar “paper-like” feel of cotton banknotes, supporting public acceptance at denominations often considered for coin replacement.

Additional features include serial and tracking numbers, and IRIFLIP, which reveals a hidden digit when tilted while concealing the “8” when viewed straight on.

Other Aspects

What distinguishes the SPARTAN Galapagos House Note is its holistic approach. It is not a showcase of individual features, but a cohesive exploration of how durability, sustainability, security, and design can work together.

Two new features debut on this note: VIVID™ Switch and IRIFLIP. Both introduce novel ways of combining strong visual impact with intuitive authentication, while remaining compatible with high-speed production and processing environments. Their inclusion reflects a broader SPARTAN philosophy—security should add value without compromising durability, recyclability, or cost efficiency.

Equally important is the tactile engineering of the substrate. SPARTAN challenges the assumption that polymer notes must feel fundamentally different from paper. By replicating key tactile cues, the house note addresses one of the main barriers to public acceptance when transitioning low denominations away from coins.

Finally, the Galapagos House Note stands out for its systems-level thinking. It considers how a note performs over years of circulation, how often it must be replaced, and what happens at end of life. In doing so, it provides central banks with a practical, thoughtfully designed vision of future currency—one that is more durable, more sustainable, and more economically rational, without sacrificing security or aesthetic appeal.
