Project Description
The Grizzly Note is a house‑note project developed by Canadian Bank Note Company Limited (CBN) to demonstrate the company’s combined strengths in design, feature integration, and collaborative client relationships. As a proud Canadian company with over a century of experience in secure printing, we view this house note not only as a demonstration of capability, but as a reflection of who we are: honest, adaptable, trustworthy, consistent, and connected to the environment around us.
The concept is inspired by the Adams River sockeye salmon run in British Columbia, an event that represents movement, resilience, and the interdependence of species within an ecosystem. These same ideas parallel how banknotes are designed, where multiple elements must work together to form a cohesive, functional whole. By drawing from the Canadian environment, the project allowed the design team to create a visual story that feels authentic.
The Grizzly Note captures this environment through illustration, engraving, colour, and composition, while integrated security features maintain the integrity of the story. The result is a note that demonstrates CBN’s strength in design, our commitment to thoughtful feature integration, and the collaborative relationships that make this level of work possible.
The Grizzly Note is a demonstration of CBN’s capabilities while acting as a meaningful creative piece. It brings together traditional craftsmanship, modern technology, and a strong narrative inspired by Canada’s natural landscape.
Design Theme
The Grizzly Note’s design theme is rooted in nature. The team chose the salmon run as the inspiration because it represents the strength, balance, and interconnection found in Canada’s natural environment. These qualities underscore how CBN approaches currency design: by developing strong working relationships and making sure every decision has purpose.
The portrait of the grizzly bear stands as the anchor of the design. Its engraved linework is among the most intricate ever produced at CBN, creating a sense of presence and strength. Surrounding the bear are carefully illustrated elements: salmon in spawning colours, Douglas firs and autumn foliage, an Osprey, and an elk standing at the forest edge. Each element reflects the interconnectedness of nature.
The colour palette draws directly from the landscape, using natural tones from the river and surrounding forest to achieve a grounded and authentic appearance. Placement of elements mirrors the natural flow of the river, guiding the eye across the note much like the river guides the salmon upstream.
One of the most engaging visual effects occurs when two notes are placed side by side. The transparent windows visually align to form a larger pool of river water, subtly reinforcing the theme of continuity and flow.
The design reflects CBN’s belief that currency should tell a story, and in this case, the story is tied to Canadian identity, our connection to nature and the way different parts of our environment work together.
Integration of Security Features
The Grizzly Note demonstrates CBN’s commitment to integrating world‑class security features seamlessly into the design, ensuring functionality without compromising artistic intent. Every feature was selected and positioned to support the narrative, allowing security elements to enhance the story rather than interrupt it.
The note’s security is built on CBN’s engraving, intaglio printing, and precise front‑to‑back register, each executed with a level of detail that reinforces authenticity. The engraved grizzly bear is a standout element, requiring exceptional skill and technical control, making it both visually compelling and extremely difficult to replicate. The front‑to‑back register further enhances security by forming a complete fish image when the note is held to the light, directly linking this feature to the salmon‑run theme.
Advanced micro‑optical effects developed in collaboration with CCL are integrated directly into the note’s structure. The CINEMA™ feature is embedded within the substrate, producing smooth, intuitive movement and depth that align naturally with the flowing river imagery. Rather than being isolated, the feature is integrated to support the visual narrative and demonstrate the flexibility of micro‑optical technology.
Complementary features, including IRISWITCH elements within the water splashes near the salmon, Spot Colour applications, refined Shadow Imagery, and Half Window structures, provide additional layers of protection. Each feature is placed where its behaviour makes visual sense, reinforcing the artwork through light, motion, and perspective.
CBN maintains a neutral, objective position on both substrate and feature selection. This approach supports CBN’s role as an expert integrator, bringing together features, materials, and printing techniques in a way that is cohesive, balanced, and purpose‑driven. The Grizzly Note demonstrates how thoughtful integration allows security to strengthen the design without defining it.
Other Aspects
Beyond its design and feature integration, the Grizzly Note reflects broader values that define CBN’s work and identity. We view the note as a contemporary expression of what it means to be Canadian. The story of the salmon run mirrors the qualities we hold as a company and as a country: honesty, adaptability, trustworthiness, consistency, and an enduring respect for nature.
The development of the note involved collaboration across multiple disciplines. Designers, engravers, feature specialists, and production experts worked together to ensure that each part of the note supported the others. This collaborative approach mirrors how CBN works with its clients through communication, research, and shared decision‑making.
The Grizzly Note also serves as a tool for conversation with future clients. It demonstrates how CBN combines narrative‑driven design with advanced feature integration, giving partners a clear sense of what is possible. The note’s ability to convey a unified story while incorporating complex technology makes it a practical example of the company’s capabilities. In addition, the note highlights CBN’s commitment to continuous improvement. Every feature, engraving style, and printing technique reflects the evolution of our craft and the innovations we pursue. The project provided opportunities to refine workflows, explore new feature combinations, and push the boundaries of visual‑security integration.
Finally, the note shows how currency can communicate more than economic value. It can express identity, represent cultural and environmental heritage, and strengthen connections between people and place. The Grizzly Note accomplishes this by grounding the design in a real Canadian environment and using thoughtful, harmonized features to support the story. As a result, it stands as both a piece of secure technology and a meaningful representation of Canadian character.
