Project Description
The coin vending machine was developed to address a critical gap in the coin recycling ecosystem, providing an efficient and accessible solution for hawkers, micro-SMEs, and individuals needing quick access to coins. By eliminating the need to queue at bank branches for coin withdrawals, the machine saves time for customers and allows banks to allocate resources to other services.
To raise awareness and build excitement, pilot testing was conducted at the Singapore International Coin Fair in March 2024. A lucky draw campaign was introduced, featuring coin rolls with special stickers that could be redeemed for gifts, encouraging public engagement and generating buzz around the machine. Following the pilot, the machine was deployed at a shopping mall over several months to gather user feedback and assess performance.
Based on this feedback, significant enhancements were made to minimize failed vending and refund incidents, ensuring a seamless user experience. The machines were designed with eight vending options: rolls of 10-cent, 20-cent, 50-cent, and $1 coins, along with twin-roll options for higher demand. Exclusively accepting QR payments, the machines eliminate the need to store and dispense change, reducing operational complexity.
Over eight months, the machine processed more than 2,500 transactions. With the improved design, additional machines will be strategically deployed across different regions in Singapore, ensuring widespread accessibility from Q1 2025. Equipped with real-time monitoring, the machines enable swift manual refunds and remote shutdowns in the event of faults, providing users with a secure and reliable service while promoting efficiency in coin distribution.

The benefit received to stakeholder/s from having more cash visibility via the new program
The introduction of the coin roll vending machines have several benefits to different stakeholders:
For business owners and retailers, the convenient access to coins via vending machines enables seamless transactions without the hassle of withdrawing coins from bank branches.
For banks, the deployment of these machines reduces counter service queues, allowing staff to focus on other key services, thereby enhancing overall customer service. Additionally, counter staff are no longer required to handle coins, minimizing errors and the need for recounts during coin transactions.
For governments and central banks, vending machines that distribute recycled coins ensure efficient recirculation within the economy. This reduces the demand for new coins at bank branches, thereby lowering the need for minting new coins and contributing to a reduction in carbon emissions.
The level of collaboration involved with the cash visibility program
We are collaborating with shopping malls and retailers to deploy the machines within their premises. Some mall management teams, having received frequent requests for coins from their tenants, have approached us for partnership opportunities.
Additionally, banks are actively seeking solutions to reduce branch crowding and queue times by automating their cash services. These include cash and coin deposit machines, automated cash dispensers, and cheque deposit machines. Integrating the coin roll vending machine into their offerings provides a comprehensive self-service solution for their customers.
We are also engaging with relevant trade fairs to demonstrate the utility of coin vending machines and educate attendees on their benefits.
Similarly, we are working with media partners to raise awareness about the importance of coin recycling and how these vending machines play a key role in supporting this initiative.
The uniqueness, creativity, and/or resourcefulness of the design/plan for the program
We identified a key inefficiency in the coin circulation ecosystem—small businesses and retailers often face difficulties obtaining coins for daily operations, while banks experience high foot traffic from customers seeking coin exchange services. To address this, we implemented a vending machine-based distribution model, leveraging an accessible and self-service approach to improve coin accessibility and circulation.
Although the concept and technology are not groundbreaking, the innovative application of a familiar solution helps resolve a persistent issue that impacts business operations and customer convenience. By strategically placing these vending machines in high-demand areas, we enable businesses to access coins quickly and efficiently, reducing reliance on traditional banking channels.
Furthermore, our approach aligns with broader efficiency and sustainability goals. By optimizing distribution and reducing unnecessary trips to banks, we lower the overall logistical and environmental costs associated with coin circulation. This practical yet impactful solution demonstrates resourcefulness in tackling a widespread but often overlooked challenge in cash management.
The effective use of technology in the program
We leveraged existing vending machine technology in a strategic and impactful way to streamline coin distribution. While the technology itself is not novel, its application in this context enhances accessibility, efficiency, and convenience for businesses and consumers alike. Consumers are also familiar with how vending machine works, thus reducing the barrier to try it or the need to educate the users on how to use it.
Additionally, the system was integrated with digital payment options, enabling users to exchange electronic payments for physical coins seamlessly. This bridges the gap between cash-based and digital transactions, catering to diverse business needs. It also reduces the need to cater for spare change (coins) during transactions.
From an operational standpoint, data analytics can be incorporated to monitor coin usage trends, optimize machine restocking, and improve placement strategies. This data-driven approach enhances efficiency and ensures a steady supply of coins where they are needed most, and also reducing downtime for out-of-stock situation for certain denominations.
Ultimately, by repurposing proven technology in a targeted manner, we provide a practical and scalable solution that improves coin accessibility, reduces strain on banks, and enhances the overall efficiency of cash circulation.
