The N$60.00 commemorative banknote is a landmark in Namibia’s currency history, a fusion of art, technology and national pride. Issued in honour of the late President H.E. Dr. Hage G. Geingob, it is the first Namibian banknote to commemorate a sitting President who passed away while in office and the first to feature a personalised serial number, “HGG00000000,” symbolising his unique legacy. Purposefully denominated to reflect 60 years of his service to Namibia, the note celebrates his journey from freedom fighter to architect of the Constitution and Head of State.
Printed on polymer, the design integrates advanced security features, including a transparent window showcasing the Independence Memorial Museum, ILLUMINATE™ security design, tactile elements, microtext, optically variable ink and an Enhanced GEMINI™ feature, a first for Namibia. Its colour palette, inspired by Sandwich Harbour where desert meets ocean, reflects harmony and sustainability, underscoring Dr. Geingob’s vision for green energy industrialisation.
The project was executed under extraordinary circumstances following his untimely passing and completed in a record 12 months from procurement and design to production, launch and issuance despite emotional and logistical challenges. This achievement, made possible through exceptional collaboration with De La Rue International Ltd. and Oumolat Security Printers, culminated in the official issuance by Namibia’s 4th President, H.E. Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, on 17 March 2025. More than currency, this banknote is a timeless tribute to resilience, progress and unity, setting a new benchmark for commemorative banknotes globally.
Innovation and unique aspects

The N$60.00 commemorative banknote embodies artistry, technology and sustainability, symbolizing Namibia’s leadership in innovation and commitment to a greener future. Its elegant colour palette, inspired by the rare beauty of Sandwich Harbour where the Namibian desert meets the sea, reflects harmony between tradition and progress while championing the global green energy agenda, a vital pathway for combating climate change and driving sustainable development. The deliberate infusion of green tones echoes Dr. Hage Geingob’s vision for renewable energy industrialization and Namibia’s role in shaping a clean-energy future. This aligns with the Bank of Namibia’s sustainability strategy, ensuring currency design reflects both national identity and global responsibility.
Technologically, the note is printed on polymer, the most advanced and eco-friendly substrate offering durability, recyclability and enhanced security. It features a transparent window showcasing the Independence Memorial Museum, ILLUMINATE™ security design, tactile elements for accessibility, microtext, optically variable ink and the Enhanced GEMINI™ feature embedded in the Namibian flag, a first for Namibia. Under UV light, the flag reveals vibrant fluorescent properties, adding sophistication and security. The note also carries a unique serial number “HGG00000000” and the microtext inscription “Forward Ever, Backward Never,” reinforcing Namibia’s enduring spirit of progress.
The obverse and reverse highlight four pillars of President Geingob’s legacy:
- Constitutional Democracy – architect of Namibia’s progressive Constitution.
- Social Inclusion – his “One Namibian House” philosophy of unity and equity.
- Green Energy Industrialization – championing renewable energy transformation.
- Sports Diplomacy & Youth Development – elevating Namibia’s global profile and empowering future generations.
This fusion of technical excellence, symbolic depth and sustainability advocacy transforms the banknote into more than currency, it is a global statement of innovation and environmental responsibility, setting a new benchmark for commemorative currency worldwide.
Overall integration of Features
The N$60.00 commemorative banknote demonstrates exceptional integration of design elements, where every feature serves both an aesthetic and functional purpose. The obverse and reverse are thoughtfully composed to narrate the life and legacy of H.E. Dr. Hage G. Geingob, with imagery and inscriptions that resonate deeply with Namibians and the global community. The colour palette, inspired by Sandwich Harbour, flows seamlessly across the note, creating visual harmony while symbolising sustainability and progress. Green tones are strategically placed to advocate Namibia’s leadership in the global green energy agenda, reinforcing the theme of environmental responsibility.
Security features are embedded in a way that complements the artistic design rather than disrupting it. The transparent window aligns with the Independence Memorial Museum imagery, while UV properties of the Namibian flag and microtext including the inspirational phrase “Forward Ever, Backward Never” are integrated subtly yet powerfully. The personalised serial number “HGG000000” is positioned to enhance uniqueness without compromising visual balance. This holistic approach ensures that the note is not only secure and technologically advanced but also a cohesive work of art, where design and security converge to tell a story of resilience, innovation, and national pride.
Tests certain aspects of the note
The N$60.00 commemorative banknote was not intended as a test note; however, its production adhered to a rigorous Quality Assurance Framework to validate all design and security elements before issuance. This framework ensured that every feature was tested for durability, functionality, and compliance with international standards. Polymer substrate underwent abrasion, folding, and environmental stress tests to confirm resilience and lifecycle performance. Security features including the transparent window, ILLUMINATE™ design, Enhanced GEMINI™, UV properties of the Namibian flag, microtext, and the inscription “Forward Ever, Backward Never” were verified using specialized equipment under normal and UV light conditions. Tactile elements were evaluated for accessibility, and machine readability was tested across ATMs, cash recyclers and sorting machines. Counterfeit resistance was assessed through simulated reproduction attempts to validate the effectiveness of integrated security features.
The Quality Assurance Framework, aligned with ISO 9001 principles, incorporated design verification, security compliance checks, production audits and final acceptance testing by independent laboratory. This comprehensive approach ensured that the banknote met global best practices for security, durability and usability while preserving its commemorative and symbolic integrity.
